2015 League Secretary, Derby Doll Army, Bout Videographer, Officially Amazing

Many words have been used to describe our December Derby Doll of the Month. Supportive, dedicated, encouraging, loving, outstanding, helpful, you get the idea. Her love of roller derby knows no bounds. Injuries may have put her on the sideline, but she stuck around and has become an essential part of this league.

She has gone above and beyond what it means to be a volunteer. Traveling to away games, taking pictures at practices, running the camera as our videographer making sure our loved ones can see us play no matter where they are. Not to mention making us all feel happy, loved and supported with her endlessly positive attitude. She volunteers so much of her time to capture moments of life as a Derby Doll and what it’s like being a part of the derby community.

We’ve barely scratched the surface of the the amazingness that is this wonderful woman, but let’s cut right to the chase and shower her with all affection she so richly deserves. Our December Derby Doll of the Month, JillJitsu!

We Asked JillJitsu 6 Questions

1. When did you see your first bout?

With Mayhem’s mom in Nov 2013.

2. How did you get involved?

I was completely in love with derby from day 1, so I came to every bout after that. I finally convinced myself that I couldn’t wait any longer and came to orientation in February. I broke a rib after only one day of skating, and that pissed me off, because it meant that I couldn’t dive in as fast as I wanted to. I asked Ringer if it would be okay if I stuck around and just learned by observing. She was so cool, and let me.

3. What’s one thing you’ve learned from derby?

That women can do anything. There is nothing the Dolls can’t do. Run a business, empower each other, build stuff, maintain stuff, push each other to be the best athletes possible.

4. What makes you stick around?

Derby is majorly addictive, but I don’t know if I would be here without the amazing athletes who let me practice photography on them! And the refs are fantastic people.

5. Advice for anyone thinking of joining derby?

Do it!!! It’s the coolest sport around!

6. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy?

I have been daydreaming about this very thing! I would buy a sweet lot of land in San Diego, and build a rink. It would be set up for derby, with locker rooms, bleachers, kitchen/concessions, offices on the second floor looking onto the track, a gift shop, and lots of training room. Jilljitsu Arena… Boom!
